The President and Council of the West African Linguistic Society (WALS) has awarded the 2017 WALC hosting rights to the University of Education Winneba, Ghana.
Hosting WALC can be financially and logistically very challenging given the global-spread of the membership of our Society. The 50th Anniversary of WALS will be commemorated during the 2017 Congress. This will attract one day that will be set aside to mark this landmark birthday. We also intend to have a day dedicated to honour Professor Joseph Greenberg (the Society’s pioneer President). Greenberg’s colleagues in Stanford University will be invited. We are also looking forward to having most (if not all) our founding members and past Presidents in attendance. All these and much more will make Winneba 2017 a very memorable Congress.
We must therefore start planning in good time. As soon as you constitute your LOC, I will find time to visit to enable us talk through your plans. Such a meeting will enable us offer suggestions that might make our tasks lighter.
Permit me once more to congratulate you for a very successful bid to host the 2017 WALC. Many distractions will come our way, but if we work together and “… keep the big picture …” in minds our tasks will turn out less tasking. Communication is the key; let us incessantly share our intensions, worries and our successes as we tag along towards a very sucessful Winneba 2017 WALC.
Once more, accept my warm congratulations and best wishes.
Professor Lendzemo Constantine Yuka
Secretary-Treasurer of WALS/SLAO
